In 1991 Peter Lynn, the owner, designer and builder of The Mill Inn, purchased a 2.5 acre block of land on Mt Buller Rd on the Delatite River at the base of Mount Buller in Victoria's High Country. Peter came to the area from Melbourne in 1980 to help build the Sun Valley Poma lift on Mt Buller. Peter had extensive building experience and years of skiing in Australia and internationally. Mt Buller was the idea environment to utilise his 2 passions. For a decade Peter built , Ski instructed and managed ski lodges on Mt Buller. When he purchased the property Peter had a dream to build off mountain cabin accommodation purely from recycled materials.
Peter started the project in 1992, 18 months later they were completed. To complement the accommodation a restaurant THE MILL INN was designed and built opening in September 2005. What makes the whole project so unique is that every major building material is recycled. Many years of visiting second hand dealers in Mansfield and Melbourne, sourcing materials from major demolitions such as The MCG, Exhibition Buildings, The Jam Factory, Royal Women's Hospital (floor), Benalla TAFE (kitchen), ski clubs on Buller, hi rise office towers (windows) and many others produced the goods to bring the dream to fruition Peter's love of the landscape, the environment and his creativity helped design a unique complex that is at one with the bush. Peter's vision is to add an art gallery, sculpture and nature walk. Click on this link to view a slide show of the construction of The Mill Inn |
